The stud was originally formed in 1967 by the late Percy Streeter and wife Shirley, who concentrated on mainly red Brahmans, but a small grey herd was also run. In the early years the stud was run at "Fairy Springs" at Calliope. Foundation sires were purchased from leading studs such as Cherokee, Burnside, Avondale, and Wairuna, and the genetic strength of these bloodlines is still evident in the herd today. Following the division of the stud in 1985, Eddie and Debbie Streeter took over ownership and the stud was moved to the Monto district in 1990. Running
around 200 red stud females and a further 200 high-grade commercial
females, the stud produces approximately 80 - 100 bulls annually for
sale. The studs motto is
“Fertile Function Brahmans”, concentrating on using only sires that
breed females with longevity, are highly fertile and have good udders.
Our aim is to achieve maximum fertility from low maintenance cattle that
have the ability to produce high quality meat. In
1998 the decision was made to commence showing the Fairy Springs cattle
and considerable success has been achieved in the show ring.
After five years of showing and following the success of our
display at Beef 2003 we have decided to exhibit our cattle at field days
as we believe this is the ideal way to present our cattle to the public. The
most significant purchase for the stud in recent years was at Charters
Towers in 1998 where the bull, Huonfels Jacob Rio was purchased.
This red polled sire with predominately American bloodlines is
crossing extremely well with Australian bloodline Fairy Springs cows.
The progeny of Jacob Rio have dominated the red offering at
Brahaman Week over the past few years obtaining the top red average
three years in succession and topping the sale in 2002 with the $55,000
sire, Fairy Springs Beaumont.
All
cattle are produced chemical free with natural alternatives used for the
control of parasites. With
the purchase of “Partree” in 2000, a small irrigation farm in the
renowned Callide Valley area, we are now producing our own fodder under
the guidance of John Pannan, a biological farming consultant from
Horsham in Victoria. An
AI programme is conducted each year giving us more scope in our
operation. In recent years
we have used limited outside bloodlines, concentrating more on line
breeding to achieve more consistency. We
approach the breeding of our cattle with an open mind and are
continually looking at ways to improve the overall quality and
efficiency in our herd. We believe as we look to the future of uncertain
economic times, rising production costs and changing weather patterns we
may need to change our paradigm on the way we think in the seedstock
industry and breed cattle that will keep the commercial cattle industry
sustainable into the future. Bulls are marketed at Rockhampton Brahman Week sale and Charters Towers Big Country sale each year as well as private sales from the paddock. A limited number of females are available for sale each year. Semen is available privately or through the Beef Breeding Services at Rockhampton.
